Parent involvement is a vital part of Cub Scouting because it strengthens the experience for both the scout and the family. When parents participate whether by attending meetings, helping with activities, or supporting advancement they show their children that scouting is important and worth their time. This shared involvement not only builds stronger family bonds but also gives scouts encouragement, guidance, and role models to look up to. Parents who are engaged help create a supportive environment where scouts can learn, grow, and thrive.

The Cub Scout philosophy of “Do Your Best” and “Be Helpful to Others” is important because it teaches young scouts values that shape their character for life. By always doing their best, scouts learn perseverance, responsibility, and pride in their efforts, no matter the outcome. Being helpful to others encourages kindness, teamwork, and respect, reminding scouts that their actions can make a positive difference in their community. Together, these principles guide scouts to grow into responsible, caring, and capable individuals.

Cub Scouting is filled with fun and exciting adventures that spark creativity and build lasting memories. Scouts get to launch rockets high into the sky, race boats they’ve crafted in the rain gutter regatta, and design and race their very own pinewood derby cars. These hands-on activities combine learning with play, giving scouts the chance to explore new skills, use their imagination, and celebrate their achievements with friends and family. Every adventure is both fun and meaningful, making scouting an experience kids look forward to every week.

In early 1969, a group of parents met with veteran Scouter Tosh Yoshizaki and agreed to form a Nishi Cub Scout Pack. Officially named the Hompa Hongwanji Buddhist Temple Cub Scouts, the group was sponsored by the Temple and officially chartered by the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) as Cub Pack 738c (Los Angeles Area Council).
The formal charter presentation took place at the Temple on September 25, 1970. BSA District Executive Gabe Estrada presented the charter, Rimban Masuoka presented the Pack 738c flag, and VFW Post 9902 provided the American flag.
In 1983, Pack 738c embraced the BSA’s new Tiger Cub Program for first-grade boys, launching its first den with five members.
Over the decades, hundreds of boys have progressed through the program, with many advancing to Boy Scout Troop 738. Remarkably, while less than 2% of scouts nationwide reach the rank of Eagle Scout, over 25% of Troop 738’s scouts achieve this highest honor—a prestigious goal for all new Cubs to aspire to.
While enrollment and leadership numbers have fluctuated over the years, the Pack’s core mission has never changed. Thanks to the Temple’s continuous sponsorship and the unwavering dedication of its leaders, the Nishi Cub Scouts Pack 738 program remains strong and vibrant today.

Being in Cub Scouts promotes growth by helping kids develop confidence, responsibility, and important life skills in a supportive environment. Scouts learn to set goals, work as part of a team, and overcome challenges through activities that are both fun and meaningful. Whether it’s completing a new adventure, helping in the community, or learning outdoor skills, each experience encourages personal development and resilience. Cub Scouting gives children the tools and values they need to grow into capable, caring, and well-rounded individuals.

Scouting at Nishi is inclusive. Boys and girls of all faiths and backgrounds are welcome to participate. Nishi Cub Scout Pack is diverse and reflects DTLA and the surrounding neighborhoods.
